Topic 2: Student Responsibilities

Science fairs are student-directed activities. The aim of science fairs is to have students investigate or address a problem using sound scientific reasoning and methodology. Science fairs are, in fact, a constructivist approach to teaching principles of scientific investigation, because, in this activity, students direct their own learning. Therefore, much of the learning and work should be done independently with the teacher providing guidance where needed. Students will work individually or in pairs. Larger group sizes are not recommended. The student is responsible for:

  • Choosing a topic of interest.
  • Devising a method of investigating the topic.
  • Determining the results.
  • Preparing a presentation board and oral presentation.
