June 2023 Newsletter – Play

Quote

Play is often talked about as if it were a relief from serious learning. But for children, play is serious learning. Play is really the work of childhood

– Fred Rogers

Hello!

Can you believe it’s already school break?? Summer is just around the corner, bringing a world of possibilities, sunshine, and the freedom to let loose and play! This month, we invite you to embrace the theme of ‘play’ and discover how it can shape your STEM journey in remarkable ways.

Play is not just reserved for childhood; it is an essential ingredient for a fulfilling life. It fuels our curiosity, ignites our imagination, and nurtures our sense of wonder. As Canadian youth with a passion for STEM, embracing play is key to unlocking your full potential and embarking on an exciting journey of discovery.

🌞 Embrace the Summer Break 🌞

Summer break is the perfect time to dive headfirst into the realm of play. It’s a time to let your curiosity roam free, to explore new interests, and to indulge in activities that bring you joy. Take this opportunity to step outside your comfort zone, challenge yourself, and engage in experiences that awaken your scientific spirit.

🔬 Curiosity Unleashed 🔬

Play is a gateway to curiosity. As you engage in different activities, hobbies, or experiments, your mind becomes a treasure trove of questions waiting to be answered. Embrace the joy of asking “What if?” and “Why not?” as you uncover new pathways to scientific inquiry. The questions that arise from play can be the perfect foundation for your next awe-inspiring STEM project.

🧪 Uncover Hidden Passions 🧪

Through play, you have the chance to stumble upon unexpected passions. It could be tinkering with electronics, exploring the wonders of biology, or coding your very own video game. When you allow yourself the freedom to play, you open doors to hidden talents and interests that may shape your future career in STEM.

✨ Foster a Playful Mindset ✨

Play is not just about the activities you engage in; it’s a mindset that fosters innovation, resilience, and a love for lifelong learning. Embrace the spirit of play as you face challenges in your STEM projects. Approach problems with curiosity, experiment fearlessly and embrace failure as a stepping stone to success. A playful mindset will propel you to greater heights and enable you to unlock solutions that others may not see.

As the host of Youth Science Canada’s Why to How podcast, I’m used to being the one asking the questions. Recently however, a CWSF alum from our Discord server turned things around by asking me the questions. Check out that video here – and while you’re on our YouTube channel, feel free to check out some of the other podcast episodes with members of our purpleSTEMwave. Stay tuned for interviews with the CWSF Platinum award winners from 2023!
