Canadian students claim top awards at international science competition in Taiwan

Ottawa, January 31, 2025 – Youth Science Canada celebrates the outstanding achievements of two Canadian students who earned top prizes at the Taiwan International Science Fair (TISF) in Taipei, held January 20 to 25, 2025. The event brought together top high school students from 30 countries to showcase their STEM projects.

Tanvir Mundra from Vancouver won first prize in Earth and Environmental Sciences for her project “Reviving Resources: Harnessing Soap Nut Greywater for Sustainable Plant Growth.” Ann Wang, also from Vancouver, secured second prize in Medicine and Health for her project “Eradicating Cystic Fibrosis Biofilms by a Novel Non-Toxic, Multi-Pathway Salicylate Therapy.

“The innovative work of Tanvir and Ann exemplifies how Canadian youth are applying their curiosity and STEM skills to tackle real-world challenges,” says Reni Barlow, executive director at Youth Science Canada. “Their success in Taiwan not only showcases Canadian excellence in youth STEM projects but also demonstrates how young scientists can contribute to solving global problems through rigorous research and creative thinking.”

Both students earned their places on Team Canada-TISF as top winners at the 2024 Canada-Wide Science Fair in Ottawa, where Wang received the Best Project Award in Discovery and Mundra captured the Platinum Award for the best Grade 9/10 project in Discovery.

Coordinated by Youth Science Canada, Team Canada delegations represent the country at international youth STEM project competitions. Students earn these international opportunities by advancing to the Canada-Wide Science Fair after competing at one of over 100 regional STEM fairs nationwide. The remarkable accomplishments of Team Canada-TISF were made possible through the generous support of Youth Can Innovate, a program of the Gwyn Morgan and Patricia Trottier Foundation. Youth Science Canada has welcomed guest projects from Taiwan at the Canada-Wide Science Fair since 1991.
