OTTAWA, August 5, 2021 – Youth Science Canada is pleased to announce its 2021-2022 board of directors, a dynamic group of volunteers to help steer the organization into the 60th anniversary edition of its flagship event, Canada-Wide Science Fair in 2022, and beyond. Changes to the board include three new directors, Michel David and Austin Sawyer for three-year terms and Leo Fung for a one-year term.

Michel David is a five-time judge and sponsor representative at the Canada-Wide Science Fair and a STEM leader with a career spanning close to four decades. Austin Sawyer is a three-time finalist at Canada-Wide Science Fair (2011, 2014 and 2015), successful entrepreneur and rising leader in tech. Leo Fung was a finalist at CWSF 2005 and is an experienced professional in the oil and gas sector.

“We are delighted to welcome Michel, Austin and Leo to Youth Science Canada’s board of directors,” said Jamie Parsons, new chair of the board for Youth Science Canada. “With their collective experience and dedication to STEM in Canada over the years, Michel, Austin and Leo’s leadership will help Youth Science Canada to deliver its mission of engaging this country’s youth to investigate the fundamental questions in our world and eventually lead to innovative solutions and tangible change for the future.”

Youth Science Canada also announces that the immediate past chair, Caroline Whippey, will step down after three years of volunteer leadership on the organization’s board.

“We’re deeply grateful to Caroline for her many contributions to our organization and her promotion of STEM in our country,” said Reni Barlow, executive director of Youth Science Canada. “Through her many hours of tireless work and contagious passion as a board member, she played an important role in our success over the past three years, especially in the face of our fast migration to all-virtual events. We look forward to Caroline’s continued volunteer work in other roles with the organization.”

Along with the appointment of the new members of the board, vice-chair Jamie Parsons has been selected to chair and secretary Mandy Dennison has moved into the role of vice-chair.
