Project registration opens at inaugural YSC Online STEM Fair

Canadian students can now register their projects in the inaugural Online STEM Fair, organized by Youth Science Canada. The registration period ends at 11:59 pm on May 18 – the eve of the start of the online fair.

“Every year, roughly 500,000 students in Canada complete a STEM project,” says Reni Barlow, executive director of Youth Science Canada. “The YSC Online STEM Fair is a chance for these students from across the country to share their sense of curiosity and passion for STEM. It’s also an opportunity for the public to celebrate STEM and get a glimpse into the next generation of innovators, researchers and entrepreneurs.”

All projects will be made available to a national audience, on the website, makeprojects.com/ysc, as of May 19. Once projects are live, judges will begin their review process aimed at recognizing outstanding projects. Judges will release their results May 29.

Along with student projects, visitors can expect to see exhibits by industry leaders, organizations, agencies and institutions in the STEM Expo area.

“We are very excited to be offering a STEM Expo, where STEM-related companies, big and small, can register to engage with students, teachers and the public,” says Liette Philippe, manager of STEM Expo. “So far, partners like Cenovus Energy, Intact Financial Corporation, NSERC, Mining Matters and Shad Canada have all signed to feature online exhibits that will contribute to the overall YSC Online STEM Fair experience.”

On May 19, teachers and parents will be able to register to receive a bilingual Student Activity Guide that helps students explore the fair, identify their own STEM interests and enhance their at-home learning experience, as well as a Teacher/Parent Guide.

Project registration is open to Canadian students, grades 7 to 12 (secondary 1 to Cégep in Quebec) with a recent STEM project. An online project template guides students through the process, which asks them to upload a one-minute video and post text and images to explain their work.

To register a project, students should download the Project Entry Guide and visit makeprojects.com/ysc.
