Coloring Chick Embryos

Description of the Project.

The main purposes in coloring embryos are to provide a practical method of identifying chicks from different groups of eggs and so you can watch their movements after they leave the nest. In wildlife management studies, where identification and observation of ducks is difficult, identification and observation are made easy by coloring the embryos with bright dyes.

 

Ruling

This  project involves the use of live animals, i.e. fertilized eggs that are allowed to hatch into chicks. Youth Science Canada places restrictions on the use of animals in science fairs, to make sure that no unnecessary pain is inflicted on the animal, and that the Federal Laws involving research on animals are followed. These rules are quite restrictive, and limit the kinds of studies that can be submitted to science fairs. In this case, your project involves injecting a substance into the fertilized egg to colour the  feathers of the chick The Policy on animals only allows this if it is done in a licensed laboratory, such as a hospital or university.
Animals cannot be displayed at science fairs, so that a project that focusses on a sequence of incubation times cannot be displayed at the fair.

Another requirement is that the project must have some potential scientific value.  Just colouring the feathers alone does not meet this condition.
