CWSF and Team Canada-ISEF alumna Ann Makosinski was featured in the January 27, 2019 episode of CBC's The Nature of Things, titled "The Nature of Invention."
Her “Hollow Flashlight” project won the Energy Challenge Award and a gold medal at the 2013 Canada-Wide Science Fair. Three months later, she was the sole Canadian among the 15 finalists, from thousands of entries from over 120 countries, selected to present their projects at the Google HQ in Mountain View, California. She won the award for best 15/16-year-old.
Ann's flashlight relies on the heat of the human hand, captured using Peltier tiles, instead of using batteries. Since 2013, Ann has given keynote speeches and TED Talks around the world, and has even appeared twice on the Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon.
In 2017, Ann Makosinski was named as one of Forbes Magazine’s 30 under 30. Her next invention: using the heat from a travel mug to charge a mobile phone.
