Canada-Wide Science Fair (CWSF) alumna, Catharine Bowman, was featured, in October, in Calgary Avenue’s “Top 40 under 40”. Catharine was raised in a family of CWSF alumni with her older bothers Jordan and Patrick participating before her. She participated in CWSF 2011 in Toronto as a grade seven student and returned with new projects at both CWSF 2012 in Charlottetown and 2013 in Lethbridge. Catharine also attended ISEF twice and placed 4th in Biomedical Sciences.
In her final year as a CWSF finalist, Catharine earned three awards including a gold medal, the intermediate level Discovery Challenge Award and a Western University scholarship. After three consecutive years of at CWSF, Catharine continued to pursue her passion for health research.
Now in her early 20s, Catharine is completing an undergraduate degree in health sciences, studying the effects of naturally occurring compounds from the lupine flower on lymphedema, an inflammatory condition affiliated with cancer treatments. As she continues her work, Catharine credits the people who saw beyond her age and focused on the importance of her work.
