  The tallies are counted at the inaugural Youth Science Canada Online STEM Fair and it’s clear that the current cohort of Canadian students is into science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). A team of volunteers from regional science fairs across the country, YSC National Judging Team members and sponsor representatives carefully reviewed 631 projects, and awarded 275 virtual ribbons at three levels as part of the online showcase that received a greater level of participation, in its first year, than even organizers expected.   At the 2019 Canada-Wide Science Fair in Fredericton, Cyril Mani won a bronze medal and the Canadian Association of Physicists Award.   Youth Science Canada is pleased to announce the ten recipients of its 2020 Distinguished Service Award. The Awards annually recognize up to ten volunteers and staff who have made an outstanding contribution, through innovation, long service, or leadership, to the organization or its programs at any level.   Eight of Canada’s top high school scientists have been selected by Youth Science Canada to represent the country at the 2020 Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) from May 10-15 in Anaheim, California. Regeneron ISEF is the world championships of science fairs. Unfortunately, the team will not participate in the event as a result of the preventative measures enacted in Canada and the U.S. to reduce the spread of COVID-19. Read more

  As a result of the preventative measures enacted by various provincial governments across Canada due to the spread of COVID-19, Youth Science Canada is unable to hold the 2020 Canada-Wide Science Fair as planned, from May 9-15 in Edmonton, Alberta. Youth Science Canada has closely monitored the advice from the Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) and respects the measures implemented at the regional level to prevent the spread of the virus.   Canada-Wide Science Fair (CWSF) alumna, Catharine Bowman, was featured, in October, in Calgary Avenue’s “Top 40 under 40”. Catharine was raised in a family of CWSF alumni with her older bothers Jordan and Patrick participating before her. She participated in CWSF 2011 in Toronto as a grade seven student and returned with new projects at both CWSF 2012 in Charlottetown and 2013 in Lethbridge. Catharine also attended ISEF twice and placed 4th in Biomedical Sciences. Read more

  This weekend, 45 of Canada’s brightest science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) students gathered at Toronto Pearson to embark on a journey of a lifetime to this year’s MILSET Expo-Sciences International (ESI), which takes place in Abu Dhabi, September 22 to 28. Young innovators and chaperones from every province and two territories are representing the country at this year’s edition of ESI, an international event that brings together students from nearly 60 countries to showcase the creativity of young scientists from all over the world.   Manning Whitby of Toronto received one of eight EIROforum Special Awards during this morning’s awards ceremony at EUCYS 2019 in Sofia, Bulgaria. The award, from EUROfusion, a consortium of national fusion research institutes, includes a one-week trip to the agency’s facility in Culham, UK. Whitby, together with Bhavya Mohan of Ottawa, represented Canada at the international competition, which rewards and celebrates promising young scientists from Europe and beyond, who present their projects to a panel of international judges.
