  Jonathan Lévesque of Lévis, Québec won a gold medal, the senior Innovation Challenge Award, and a Youth Can Innovate Award at CWSF 2018 for QualyL, his first-of-its-kind, no replacement artificial heart. The unique invention not only functions as a heart, but also runs real-time self-diagnostic tests to detect any problems, and adjusts beats-per-minute based on the patient’s situation (such as physical activity or altitude changes), all while being roughly 250 times cheaper than current artificial hearts.   Elle n’avait que 11 ans lorsqu’elle a décidé de prendre le taureau par les cornes dans sa collectivité et ailleurs au pays. Le projet de Stella Bowles, présenté à l’Expo-sciences pancanadienne 2017, portait sur les eaux d’égout brutes polluant une rivière près de chez elle.   It came down to the final two award presentations, but young Canadians won two of the three First Place Awards at this year's European Union Contest for Young Scientists (EUCYS) in Dublin, Ireland. Brendon Matusch (15) of Sudbury, Ontario (left in photo) and Nicolas Fedrigo (17) of Victoria, British Columbia (right in photo) made EUCYS history in that moment as Canada became the first non-EU country to win two of the three First Place Awards. ISEF is the world's largest pre-college celebration of science that brings together over 1,800 students from more than 80 nations to compete for over $4 million in awards, scholarships, tuition grants, internships, scientific field trips and 3 grand prizes, including a $75,000 university scholarship.
