Today was an exciting and fast-paced day, starting off with project set-up and safety checks in the morning. Finalists and delegates teamed up to perfect their project displays and become acquainted with their fellow participants. Following set-up, students were free to spend their afternoon exploring McGill campus.
The fun-filled evening then began with the Opening Ceremony in the exhibit hall, featuring a musical performance by Solstice and the Finalist’s, Delegate’s and Judge’s Pledge for the week. The Black Watch Pipes and Drums then led a parade of flag bearers for each of the provinces and territories, leading the excited crowd to the Flavours of Montreal event.
The McConnell Arena was barely recognizable, following its transformation into the sleek science lounge that was the setting for the evening. Surrounding the hall were various French Canadian delicacies including poutine, Montreal smoked meat, Caramel pudding cake and waffles with maple syrup. It was certainly a delicious affair!
The entertainment for the evening kicked off with traditional Japanese drumming and went on to feature First Nations hoop dancing, R’voyure folk dancing and Irish dancing. It was a fantastic event and now the finalists are off to bed to get a good night’s rest before judging tomorrow.
On that note, as you spend the evening finishing up last minute preparations for tomorrow, here are a few tips for a positive judging experience:
1. Make a good first impression by dressing neat and being polite.
2. Keep your energy up by eating breakfast and staying hydrated.
3. Be confident! Remember you are the expert on your project.
4. Relax and have fun, the ultimate prize is being able to experience this incredible week.
Today’s fun fact about Montreal is that no building in the city can be taller than the cross on Mount Royal Mountain. Tomorrow is going to be 10 degrees with a 60% chance of rain so don’t forget the CWSF umbrella you got in your welcome package when you head to the exhibit hall in the morning. Check out some of the photos from today below and have a great night’s rest before judging. Best of luck to all finalists and remember to have fun!
